| New Margosa Wood Tables |
March 09, 2010
|
At Pfeifer Studio we love Margosa wood, and you may have noticed the majority of our custom wood stool and side tables are made out of it. Available in light blond to a medium reddish-brown, we shape it, carve it, age it, stain it, and seal it, and its adaptability allows us the freedom to create. So, what exactly is Margosa and where does it come from.
A Margosa (Neem) Tree in IndiaMargosa, also known as neem, is an abundant tropical to subtropical East Indian tree noted to be the fasted growing broad-leaved evergreen native to India and Myanmar. Noted as the “Divine Tree” in India, it is known to have medicinal properties and its bitter bark, trunk, and seeds have been used to produce health and beauty products, toothpaste, pesticides, and medicines. Also known as the “wonder plant,” we adore the distinct cracks and separations that occur as the wood dries and shrinks with age.
Cernosia Stool Table, 12 diameter x 21 H inches, $349.00 DeliveredJust into the studio, the Cernosia Stool Table, Burke Side Table, and Contemporary Turned Wood Stool Table are prime examples of Margosa wood’s versatility. The Cernosia Stool Table, cleverly sculpted out of a solid block of wood, resembles a perfectly stacked pile of books when placed next to a cozy reading chair. Just the right height for a cup of tea, it also provides a place to set one’s reading specs while resting tired eyes.
Burke Side Table, 15 diameter x 20 H inches, $339.00 Delivered
A rich stained blend of walnut and chocolate, the Burke Side Table delivers a well-chosen combination of texture and color. Aged over several years to reveal the desirable characteristics of this wood, the dense Margosa base bares a deep walnut stain topped with a sleek pebble-embossed chocolate brown leather wrapped surface. Contemporary Turned Wood Stool Table, 12 diameter x 21 H inches, $359.00
Inspired by the likes of a curvaceous Botero sculpture, we like to think of this Contemporary Turned Wood Stool Table as a sexy work of art. Strong and proud, this intricately hand-turned mass of Margosa wood celebrates the natural beauty and grain of medium reddish-brown tones in bold voluptuous proportions.
Offering an ever-growing collection of stools and side tables, we invite you to take a look at our latest additions or revisit some of our classics. While you’re at it, if you don’t quite see what you’re looking for, just ask! We’ve been known to change things up a bit and look forward to your unique request. | Eco-Friendly Jewelry from Ecuador |
March 06, 2010
|
We just debuted a new line of Fair Trade jewelry from Ecuador in our shop this week created from eco-friendly Taugua and Açaí nuts. The purchase of jewelry made with natural materials encourages the preservation of trees and of traditional forest communities. No trees are cut down for the harvest of these nuts, thus it is a sustainable source of income for the communities. The jewelry also provides indigenous people access to a market beyond their communities and thus an economic alternative to selling their land, protecting both a way of life and the world’s precious forests.
Acai Seed Dangle Earrings - $35.00 In Store Only
The Açaí seed comes from the Açaí Palm found in the lush rainforests of South America. This palm grows mainly in swamps and floodplains and is approximately 45 to 90 feet tall. The fruit is harvested for food; most often served as a beverage, especially in Brazil, and has gained global fame in recent years due to its high antioxidant and energizing properties.
Tagua Slice Necklace $35.00 - In Store Only
The Tagua nut comes from the Ecuadorean Ivory Palm, which flourishes in the lowlands of South America. The medium-sized palm, reaching up to 60 feet tall, grows quickly and easily in shady, humid places hidden below larger trees. The nut is collected from large pods emerging from the palm’s trunk. These regenerative pods can be harvested by climbing the tree or collected later once they fall to the forest floor. Tagua is a perfect natural material for making beads, buttons, and figurines; before the age of plastic, tagua was used to produce large quantities of buttons for world markets. Whether hand-dyed into a wide spectrum of colors or left in a more natural state, the versatility of this nut makes it a unique addition to any jewelry piece.
Check out the great video above showing the story behind the jewelry. The opening scenes are from one of the artisans homes in the rural community of Illuman, in the Andes. You'll see the designers and artisans having their semi annual dinner party (this time a pig roast!) and then working on new designs for spring. Then join the designers on a journey into the Tagua forest in the coastal region of Ecuador! You'll see how the farmers climb into the trees on hand made ladders to knock down the excess seed pods and watch as they split open the seed pod to reveal the raw tagua inside. From there they travel on to a work shop to see how the dried tagua is cut, dyed and made into bracelets. Next, the designers are back developing new products in the village of Pucara. Things get a little emotional during the big meeting in the following scenes, where everyone takes time to give thanks and talk about how their lives have changed drastically over the last year. We hope that you'll love this new collection of handmade jewelry as much as we do, stop by our showroom soon to have a look for yourself, or give us a call at 1-866-804-1909 with any questions. | Custom Project: Turned Wood Tables |
March 03, 2010
|
In the hospitality industry it’s all about making guests comfortable through great service and a welcoming environment. Recently commissioned to produce our Bosque and Dominguez Stool Tables in custom sizes [dimensions] for the Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln, CA, Pfeifer Studio called upon a local woodcrafter from right here in New Mexico for assistance. Intricate woodturning met with beautifully aged [locally harvested] solid Pine created just the right look for the casino’s rich atmosphere.

An artisan turns the tables on a LARGE lathe It is noted that the history of woodturning dates back to around 1300 BC and began with the Egyptians and a two-person lathe. One person turned the wood with a rope while the other used a carving tool to make shapes in the wood. The process, improved upon by the Romans with the addition of a turning bow, was eventually replaced by a hand-operated pedal connected to a pole to free the craftsman’s hands to hold the woodturning tools. Bosque Stool Tables fresh off the lathe
Today the system is called a “spring pole” lathe, which was commonly used into the early 20th Century. As the process continues to evolve over time, it still remains an art form that requires a strict eye and a fine artisan for the job.
Dominguez Stool Tables ready for finishing At Pfeifer, we offer a bit of our own hospitality to our clients with our custom design capabilities. Whether a one-of-a-kind piece, a style produced in larger quantities, or a modified version of one of our current product offerings, we invite you to contact us at 1-866-804-1909 to discuss ideas for your next project. | Spend $50+ and Help Plant Trees! |
November 05, 2009
|
The Holiday Season is right around the corner and we are excited to announce a special partnership that starts today, which we will run until the end of the year. As part of our commitment to give back, for every order of $50+ placed online or in our retail studio, we will make a $1 donation to help plant native trees along the banks of the Rio Grande River here in New Mexico, in collaboration with Tree New Mexico.
Tree New Mexico (http://www.treenm.com/) is dedicated to ensuring sustainable forests in urban and rural communities and natural areas through restoration, public education and advocacy. Incorporated in May of 1990 and recognized nationally, Tree New Mexico is known to be one of the most successful urban and rural tree planting efforts in the nation. The Tree NM Center in Albuquerque's North ValleyIts partners and volunteers have planted over 950,000 trees in New Mexico and on Navajoland in Arizona. Pfeifer Studio’s donations to Tree New Mexico will benefit a restoration project in the 17 mile stretch of open space that spans Albuquerque’s riparian woodlands, locally known as the bosque, which surround the Rio Grande River and passes less than a mile from our North Valley studio. - The Nursery at Tree NM-The supported project is focused on restoring the bosque through the removal of non-native invasive species; primarily Salt Cedar, Russian Olive, Mulberry, Tree of Heaven and Siberian Elm.
As importantly the project then replants native trees, such as Cottonwood, New Mexico Olive, Choke Cherry and Black Willow. The non-native species harm the eco-system by crowding out natives and consuming copious amounts of the region’s limited water resources. The Unmistakable Yellow Leafs of a Cottonwood in AutumnAll non-natives are bad, but few are as destructive as Salt Cedar. The early 20th century decision to plant salt cedar to stabilize stream banks in New Mexico ultimately diminished the flow of the river and tributaries vital to the agricultural, environmental and economic stability of the region. Salt cedar is a major factor in the Rio Grande’s low water levels. One salt cedar is a giant straw, sucking as much as 200 gallons of water per day out of rivers, springs and wetlands. - Salt Cedars Along the Rio GrandeTree New Mexico has help preserve and restore the eco-system of the middle Rio Grande valley for 20 years and we are honored to partner with them. Shop with confidence and help us give back this holiday season.

| Custom Project: Black Leather Table |
October 20, 2009
|
We recently finished this custom leather table for a client in Chicago, which was based on a similar style in chocolate brown that some of you may remember from our collection. The client needed it in black and wanted to add some texture to the leather. Ultimately she chose a crocodile emboss from a selection of embossing samples, and the rest is history. We love this one! Best of all it was delivered in only 4 weeks. If you need a custom piece of furniture or a one-of-a-kind home accessory look no further than Pfeifer Studio. We work with global artisans to create custom designs for our clients. Many of the styles sold online can be ordered in custom sizes and materials. | A World Tour of Handicrafts |
October 07, 2009
|
As you may have noticed, we love handcrafted objects. There is something about seeing the hand of the maker in the piece that adds another level of meaning to the design. We are excited to add a new selection of traditional handicrafts to our online collection that have already proven to be popular at our retail showroom in New Mexico. With this collection, we cover the globe from Europe to India, Vietnam and back through Nepal and North Africa; a world tour of handicraft. The first stop on our voyage is Portugal, where we found these elegant red clay pottery dishes, which are great for baking and also excellent as serving dishes.
Traditionally these bowls are finished with a clear glaze to highlight the beautiful, natural terracotta color, so we snatched up these rare earthy green scalloped-edge bowls when we spotted them. Over to South Asia now, where we discovered these beautiful pillows featuring a traditional Tree Of Life appliqué design that was created with naturally dyed block printed fabrics. The concept of a many-branched tree illustrating the idea that all life on earth is interconnected has been used in science, religion, philosophy and mythology for centuries. A tree of life is both a mystical concept alluding to the interconnectedness of all life and a metaphor for common descent in the evolutionary sense not only in Indian culture, but in traditions worldwide.
Nepal is our next stop heading east, where people living in the mountainous regions have practiced the tradition of hand felting for centuries. Our colorful wool felt necklaces are created by local villagers who form balls from wool fiber by hand using only heat and water. Our handcrafted Teddy Bear is created in Vietnam with traditional Hmong fabric. The Hmong are a Asian ethnic group living in mountainous regions, who are know for their traditional cross-stitched textiles. Each bear in our collection is unique and considered one-of-a-kind.
- To end our journey, we head back to North Africa for a visit to the bazaar in Marrakesh, where our Moroccan Tea Glasses are a staple for the market's chaotic shoppers. Available in Pale Green or Cobalt Blue, they are created from 100% recycled glass. Hand crafted and earth friendly! We love each of these hand-selected designs. Click here to see them now along with our other Pfeifer Finds.

| Clay Cooking Cazuelas From Spain |
September 11, 2009
|
Often the simplest things are best. Our clay cookware from Spain exemplifies this philosophy. Earth, water and fire, that’s it. The elegance of our cazuelas (clay cooking dishes) lies in their enduring usefulness. They are formed by a potter and the handles are attached by hand. The high quality clay (as dense as brick) is finished with a clear lead free glaze and fired in a kiln over 2000° F. They can be used on the stovetop, oven, microwave, open fire, and grill. These timeless vessels are EU and US FDA certified food safe, and are almost ready to use. A simple overnight soak in your sink is all that is needed. Resoak your cazuela from time to time, and it will provide you years of stylish service.
Eggs and Spanish Sausage in a Cazuela - People have crafted clay cooking vessels for thousands of years. The quality of the clay found in Breda, in the Pyrenees foothills, has been prized since Roman times. Breda’s celebrated cookware is crafted in the same tradition as it has been for the last 500 years.
Our Cazuelas are Kiln Fired The cazuelas are a natural fit to various Mediterranean cuisines, Some of our favorite things to make using the cazuelas are: potato gratins, sautéed greens with piñones and bacon, goat cheese/green chile macaroni and cheese, enchiladas, carne adovada (pork in red chile) and baked trout with fennel…Happy cooking!

| Custom Project: White-Washed Tables |
September 04, 2009
|
We love when we have the opportunity to create original custom designs for our clients that are not an adaptation of an existing style, such as making a pillow at a custom size or staining a table dark brown. We recently worked with a institutional client to create these beautiful turned wood tables for the offices at a sports arena. The designers approached us with the initial concept for the look and dimensions and we worked together to find the appropriate source and materials. In the end, the tables were turned by a local craftsman here in New Mexico from locally harvested Fir wood and finished with a white-washed stain. We love their classic shape and the white finish really makes them stand out. As always, we work with global artisans to create custom designs for our clients. Many of the styles sold online can be ordered in custom sizes and materials. We also create original one-of-a-kind designs and custom styles that are produced in larger quantities.

| Tuareg Leather Pillow |
July 27, 2009
|
Every once and a while we come across an object which is so enthralling, we wished we had created it ourselves. But we can't design everything so...alas, we must admire as we are inspired. Our newest Pfeifer Find, a hand-crafted leather pillow from the Tuareg nomads of the Sahara Desert, has instilled in us such admiration. Traditionally used for sitting or sleeping on the ground, these beautiful pillows are made from hand dyed goat skin and feature hand painted geometric patterns and leather fringe. They are stuffed with feather and down and sewn closed with a waxed linen twine. In Africa they would most likely fill them with a dried grass. Since each is unique, please allow for variation in pattern and dimension. We receive calls and emails almost daily from clients hoping to find one more of a style which is sold out. We are telling you now to not hesitate with these pillows, as limited quantities are available. Click here to order yours now. Tuareg Craftsmen selling their leather goods in West Africa
Now, more about the culture which creates these beautiful cushions. The Tuareg are a nomadic people who are the principal inhabitants of the Saharan interior of North Africa and are today mostly in West Africa. Our pillows are hand made by a group of sisters in Niger whose brother lives here in New Mexico and supplies them directly to us. He charges us a fair price, but also says that he wants his sisters to make as much as possible because they are their primary source of income.
Tuareg Women Sewing Leather Sections
The Tuareg are much admired for their crafts, and much of their art is in the form of jewelry, leather, metal saddle decorations and finely crafted swords. Among their most famous products are the Tuareg Takoba (Sword), necklaces called 'Takaza' and earrings called 'Tizabaten'.

| Custom Project: Leather Waste Bin with Custom Emboss |
July 13, 2009
|
We have been busy with many great custom projects lately, everything from large furniture pieces to smaller customizations of existing styles from the collection. Recently a designer in California wanted to create leather waste bins embossed with a company logo for one of her client’s offices and she knew that the place to turn to was Pfeifer Studio. - Custom design is often very simple. For this project, we took an existing design, our Leather Waste Bin, fabricated it at a unique dimension (10 x 10 x 10 inches) and embossed the leather sides with custom logos. Leather embossing plates with custom patterns and text are inexpensive and quick to create. In fact, the entire project took only 3 weeks to complete, and to expedite the process the order was dropped shipped directly to the client from our workshop in India.
The Final Product: Waste Bins with Custom EmbossesAt Pfeifer Studio, we work with global artisans to create custom designs for our clients. Many of the styles sold online can be ordered in custom sizes and materials. We also create original one-of-a-kind designs and custom styles that are produced in larger quantities. Working Graphic Composition With Embossing Design & Placement - Like most of our custom leather work, this project was completed with an artisan workshop in India, which works in leather, solid wood & wood veneers, natural fabrics and upholstery, with lead-times ranging from 2 - 24 weeks. - To learn more about our custom design capabilities contact us at 1-866-804-1909 to discuss your ideas.

| Jewelry Preview at our Showroom |
July 08, 2009
|
Although our retail showroom is located in Albuquerque’s North Valley we are only about 300 yards outside the village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, which is essentially a village within the greater city limits. Located in a rural setting, Los Ranchos is home to riparian farmland and in the summer, endless fields of lavender. When the second weekend of July rolls around the fields are in full bloom, and it is once again time for the annual Lavender in the Village Festival. Imagine vibrantly-hued fields on a sunny day, children playing and laughing, cooking classes, shopping, art, growers' markets and you’ll get a good idea of what the event holds. A Lavender Field in Los Ranchos with the Sandia Mountains in the background To celebrate, Pfeifer Studio is hosting a preview of new jewelry from two of our most popular designers; Rahel Fikre-Selassie and Amy Simon-Jackson. For those of you not familiar with their work, each is influenced by tribal art and exotic materials.
Hawaiian Kukui Nut Necklace with African Trading Beads by Rahel Fikre-Selassie Rahel, who was born in Ethiopia, searches to find a “balance, a fusion between Ethiopia and the United States, to find a way so they are not in conflict and to minimize any contradiction. My jewelry is an expression of my search for a balance. I hope that whoever wears them will also feel a sense of being transported to another space, with it's own language and culture."
Wood Bead Necklace with Japanese Ojime Squirrel Bead by Amy Simon-Jackson- Amy, a native of Texas and long-time resident of New Mexico, thinks that “to adorn oneself is a uniquely human trait. You don't often hear about other animals making accessories for themselves....although I do know of a "carrier shell" that decorates its shell with other smaller shells. What is this urge? My jewelry is a product of my fascination with and enjoyment of adornment. Jewelry making is a way of play for me and I hope my pieces will accentuate the wearer’s natural beauty and individuality as he or she walks the path.” Everyone is invited to stop by our showroom on Saturday at 3PM to meet these two fascinating designers. Learn more about their work as each discusses the inspiration, creative process & exotic materials behind their handmade collections.

| Recycled Wire Stool Table |
June 12, 2009
|
The latest design to find a place in our Eco-Friendly category is this modern stool fashioned from wire created with reclaimed scrap metal, otherwise destined for the landfill. As always, to be considered Eco-Friendly a design must either be created from products which are 100% natural, finished with non-toxic earth-friendly products or created from reclaimed woods and materials. Click here to see more Eco-Friendly designs now.The metal used to create the recycled wire on this design comes from a range of products including vehicles and building supplies. More than 145 million tons of recyclable scrap metal is processed each year into raw materials and it is one of the few products that contributes positively to the U.S. balance of trade, with $15.7 billion exported annually. Scrap recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserves energy and natural resources. It diverts 145 million tons of materials away from landfills each year and helps keep air and water cleaner by removing potentially hazardous materials from the eco-system. In additional to the obvious environmental benefits, we love the contrast of an industrial material with the open design of the wrapped wire frame. Its durable construction is suitable for an interior setting or covered exterior space. -
